Essex Witch Tour,
Explore one of England’s darkest chapters on this guided tour following the footsteps of Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled Witchfinder General who led one of the country’s largest witch hunts in 17th-century Essex.
Starting just outside Colchester, we’ll journey through the area where over 300 people were accused of witchcraft during Hopkins’ reign of terror. Along the way, hear chilling tales of witches, ghosts, and local legends that bring the region’s eerie history to life—perfect for the Halloween season.
We’ll stop in the picturesque village of Dedham for a leisurely lunch break, where you can visit local tea rooms and pubs and discover the village’s own tale of a witch.
Our tour continues in Colchester near the historic Colchester Castle, where Hopkins imprisoned some of his victims. You’ll have the option to explore the castle (admission fee applies) or join a short guided walk around the castle grounds and park to uncover more fascinating and grim stories of the area. There will also be free time to explore before we head back.
This is a fascinating day of history, mystery, and legend, perfect for anyone intrigued by England’s haunted past.
