Little Trains of North Wales

The nostalgic little railways of Wales revive childhood memories of days gone by. Join us to explore this beautiful country on vintage steam trains that weave their way through the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Day 1

We travel to Wales stopping in Shrewsbury for lunch to be purchased. Arrive at the hotel where we have a cup of tea/coffee on arrival. Time to relax before your evening meal with an included glass of wine.

Day 2

Join our driver for a scenic journey via Colwyn Bay to the coastal town of Llandudno, with its wonderful beaches and lovely wide promenade. There are many shops to delight you and restaurants and cafes to tempt you. We take a ride to the summit of the Great Orme. The journey begins at Victoria Station, a short distance from Llandudno's seaside pier. Climb aboard one of the most beautifully restored tramcars and start your ascent through the winding roads of the Great Orme. At the summit the views are breath-taking. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as the Isle of Man, Blackpool, and the Lake District! We return to our hotel for our evening meal.

Day 3

Today, after breakfast, we take a short walk to Llanberis Station from our hotel for our return ride on the Snowdon Mountain Railway to Clogwyn Station ¾ of the way up the mountain, where an unsheltered viewing platform offers spectacular views of the valleys below a 30-minute stopover here to take in the views. This afternoon we visit the National Slate Museum (free entry) where we explore the history of slate, the traditional craft of the quarrymen in authentic workshops. There is a restaurant onsite where you can purchase lunch. Afterwards we take a ride on the Llanberis Lake Railway, the little steam engine takes us on a 5-mile return journey alongside Lake Padarn. We travel a very short distance by coach to our hotel.

Day 4

After breakfast, we travel to the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed where we make a short stop before we travel through the spectacular Snowdonia National Park where we make our way to the seaside town of Porthmadog. Free time here to obtain lunch before we board a train on the Ffestiniog Steam Railway. Sit back and relax as we enjoy the 13 ½ mile journey with views of mountains, lakes, and waterfalls to Caernarfon. Afterwards we spend a short time in Caernarfon to take pictures of spectacular Castle or wander around the tiny individual shops before returning to our hotel.

Day 5

After breakfast we head for home area making suitable comfort stops along the way.

ROYAL VICTORIA SNOWDONIA HOTEL, LLANBERIS ***

Few hotels can command such breath-taking views as the Royal Victoria Snowdonia Hotel, nestling between the twin lakes of Padarn and Peris, at the foot of Snowdon. The welcome here is warm and genuine and the atmosphere is of complete relaxation. The restaurant enjoys lovely views and the public bars are a great place to meet before our evening meal. The hotel does have a lift, but it does not up go to all floors. The single bedded rooms at this hotel are cosy with small standard sized beds.
