Founded in 71 AD, York has a rich history awaiting to be discovered. York Minister is a huge 13th century gothic cathedral that towers over the city, whose walls provide a pathway for relaxing walks on both sides of the picturesque River Ouse. With a wealth of attractions, York also has a thriving shopping scene, including the famous Shambles.
Heres our recommendations of what to see and do whilst visiting...
York Minster Cathedral - one of Englands finest Gothic cathedrals.
Inside, you can see incredible stained-glass windows, medieval stonework, and the Chapter House.
If youre up for it, climb the tower (there are many steps) to get panoramic views over Yorks rooftops and rooftops of the city walls.

Walk the City Walls & Stroll the Shambles - two of Yorks most atmospheric walkable experiences.
Walk the York city walls: These are some of the most complete medieval city walls in England. Walking parts (or all) of them offers lovely views over the city, its churches, river, and old streets.
Stroll through The Shambles: This narrow, timber-framed street is quintessential York. It feels like stepping into a medieval town, full of character, quirky shops, cafés, and photo-worthy nooks.
