Weekend in Rouen, France

Rouen, the capital of Normandy, is a historical and beautiful city in Northern France with plenty of things to see and do. Victor Hugo famously described Rouen as ‘the town of 100 spires. Hugely important during medieval times, it is where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. See the Gros-Horloge, a 14th century astronomical clock set in a Renaissance arch. You can also visit the Cathédrale Notre-Dame which has featured in many paintings by Turner and Monet, who was inspired by the landscapes of Normandy. Strolling around its quaint old streets feels like a walk back in time. We have also included a visit to charming Honfleur.

Day 1

Outward journey via Eurotunnel to Calais, then travel to Abbeville, capital of maritime Picardy. The city of Abbeville boasts magnificent buildings of Flamboyant Gothic style. Arrive in Rouen with time to freshen up before purchasing an evening meal from one of the many local restaurants.

Day 2

After breakfast enjoy a day at leisure in Rouen, a port city on the river Seine and capital of the northern French region of Normandy. With its magnificent Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter and exceptional museums, Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging destinations. There is so much to see here you will be spoiled for choice

Day 3

After breakfast, depart for the delightful harbour town of Honfleur on Normandy’s coast. Colourful half-timbered houses jostle for position on the quays, along with art galleries and restaurants are open all year round. Honfleur is famous for its seafood and there are many platters and dishes on offer in the town. Take a walk around the market which is held here every Saturday morning.

Day 4

Depart Rouen and travel to Le Touquet, a small seaside town in Northern France, for lunch to be purchased. Then continue to Calais for our return Eurotunnel crossing, making suitable comfort stops along the way.

The 3 star hotel is in a good location near the city centre and Rouen Cathedral. A cold buffet breakfast composed of sweet and savoury dishes. Pastries baked on site and fresh French Madeleine cakes may also be available, as well as a hot beverage and a piece of fruit to take away. There are many restaurants in the city to purchase an evening meal.
