A cosy and unpretentious family home with a fine collection of Arts & Crafts interiors.
Book NowStanden was built in the 1890s by the architect Philip Webb for a prosperous London solicitor, James Beale, his wife Margaret and their seven children. The interior of the house retains many of the original wallpapers and textiles designed by Webbs friend William Morris and has important contents by Morris Arts & Crafts Movement contemporaries including William De Morgan and W.A.S Benson, among others. After youve wandered through the House, relax and explore Mrs. Beales Arts & Crafts garden. Divided into many outdoor rooms, each with its own theme, colours, texture and detail, its inspired by the High Weald landscape. If you want to explore further there are many wonderful walks through 100 acres of the original Standen estate (leaflets available at reception).
Please Note: The ground floor of the house is fully accessible. There is no access to other floors, but photograph albums which illustrate the collections on the first floor are available. The garden, which is set on a hillside, is only partly accessible and there are some steps and steep slopes.
