Mixing it Up in the Shires

Day 1

We depart home area and make our way to the lovely town of Stamford where many period dramas have been filmed. There are many delightful shops and eateries. We continue to our hotel in Nottingham with time to relax before our evening meal.

Day 2

Following a leisurely morning, head to Cromford to board Birdswood, the historical narrow boat run by volunteers. During the 2 hour cruise through the beautiful Derwent Valley, we will enjoy the bespoke commentary onboard. This afternoon, to the Peak District town of Bakewell, famous for its puddings.

Day 3

This morning to Bolsover Castle, the fantasy hilltop pleasure palace of a horse-mad Cavalier playboy. This Stuart mansion still impresses with its aristocratic extravagance, lavishly decorated rooms, riding school and wonderfully recreated garden. This afternoon the picturesque historic market town of Newark, on Wednesday, the market held on one of the finest Georgian squares.

Day 4

First visit today is Trentham Estate and its wonderful gardens. There are 725 acres of spectacular natural beauty which has been transformed over the last 15 years into some of the finest in Britain. Marvel at the transformations led by Chelsea gold winners Tom Stuart-Smith and Piet Oudolf. Stroll through the estate’s outdoor shopping village before we visit the National Memorial Arboretum, honouring those who served and continue to serve our nation.

Day 5

We depart for home area stopping in the beautiful historic town of St Ives, Cambridgeshire. Markets have been a feature here since 1100 and every Friday in Market Hill there is a small street market. Take a stroll alongside the river and purchase lunch in one of the many eateries.
