Entry Formalities and Indian Visa

A passport valid for at least six months beyond the return date, and a valid Indian visa, are mandatory for all British and other Western nationals. E-visa (30 days): indianvisaonline.gov.in. Costs and formalities remain the traveller's responsibility.

 

Time Difference

India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK during GMT and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead during British Summer Time. India does not observe daylight saving.

 

Health and Vaccinations

No specific vaccine is mandatory for entry into India. Recommended: polio, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A & B, typhoid. Mosquito-bite protection is advisable. Bottled, sealed water only.

 

Currency

Indian Rupee (INR). Currency exchange is available at upper-category hotels and licensed exchange counters. Import and export of Indian rupees is prohibited. Torn or damaged notes are not accepted locally. ATMs are available in all towns on the circuit.

 

Tips

As a guideline: driver 4–5 USD/day, guide 5–7 USD/day, porter 50–60 INR. These are average ranges, to be adjusted freely (up or down) at the group's discretion. Tipping is customary in India though never obligatory.

Day 1

London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi – Overnight Flight
Travel from our local area to London Heathrow for our overnight Etihad Airways flight to Chennai via Abu Dhabi.

Day 2

Chennai
Arrive in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, where we’ll be met by our local guide and transferred to the The Residency, Chennai Hotel. Later, enjoy a visit to Marina Beach, one of the world’s longest urban beaches.

Day 3

Chennai to Mahabalipuram
Travel along the scenic Coromandel Coast to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Mahabalipuram. Visit the spectacular Arjuna’s Penance and watch local craftsmen continue the ancient tradition of stone carving before overnighting at the Coral Beach Resort.

Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry
Watch local fishermen returning with their overnight catch before visiting the magnificent Shore Temple, overlooking the Bay of Bengal. Continue to the charming former French colony of Pondicherry for a two-night stay at the Sunway Manor.

Pondicherry
Explore Pondicherry’s elegant French Quarter by rickshaw, visit the colourful Manakula Vinayagar Temple, discover the unique township of Auroville, and enjoy a fascinating visit to a local community project.

Pondicherry - Chidambaram - Darasuram - Thanjavur
Journey to Chidambaram to visit the impressive Nataraja Temple, before seeing traditional bronze casting at a local workshop. Continue to the beautiful Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram before arriving in Thanjavur for an overnight stay at the Deshadan Chola Resort ***.

Thanjavur to Chettinad
Visit the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, one of India’s greatest architectural achievements, before travelling to the fascinating Chettinad region. Enjoy a traditional lunch, visit a grand merchant mansion and see the famous handmade Athangudi tiles before overnighting at the Chettinadu Mansion Hotel.

Chettinad to Madurai
Travel to the ancient city of Madurai, one of India’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. The afternoon is free to relax or enjoy an optional Ayurvedic massage. Overnight at the JC Residency.

Madurai
Experience Madurai’s bustling flower market before breakfast, then visit the spectacular Meenakshi Amman Temple and the impressive Thirumalai Nayak Palace. Later, enjoy free time to explore the colourful bazaars before returning to our hotel.

Madurai to Munnar
Cross into the lush state of Kerala, climbing through spice plantations to the cool hill station of Munnar. This evening enjoy a colourful Kathakali dance performance before arriving at the Silver Tips Hotel.

Munnar to Alleppey
Descend to Alleppey, where we’ll board a traditional Kerala houseboat. Cruise through the peaceful backwaters, passing coconut palms, villages and paddy fields before anchoring for the night on-board our Kerala houseboat.

Enjoy a full day cruising through Kerala’s tranquil waterways, experiencing authentic village life while relaxing aboard our traditional houseboat. All meals are included as we spend a second night on board.

Travel to the historic port city of Kochi. Visit the famous Chinese Fishing Nets, the historic Paradesi Synagogue, and stroll through the aromatic spice markets of Jew Town before overnighting at the Abad Plaza Hotel.
