BY AIR HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 We transfer by coach to our UK airport for our flight to Croatia. On arrival we are met by our guide and transferred by coach to our hotel in Opatija.
DAY 2 After breakfast our coach and guide will meet us for our first excursion to Motovun & the Istrian coast. With its elegant system of towers, walls, gates and piazzas, the village of Motovun is perched on a hill some 227m above sea level. Being a part of the Venetian empire it is a striking example of Venetian colonial architecture. On the Istrian coastline lies Porec & Rovinj. The historic old town of Porec is home to the Euphrasius Basilica, a masterpiece of Byzantine art, which still contains original mosaics and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (entry included). We shall also enjoy wine tasting near Porec. Rovinj is a typical medieval Venetian town with narrow lanes to explore.
DAY 3 Today will be at leisure, providing us the opportunity to relax.
DAY 4 Today we cross the border and travel to Slovenia to visit one of nature’s jewels, the Postojna Caves. A train will take us on a 2km journey to the Great Mountain. Here we will disembark and continue the tour of the caves on foot to discover their awe-inspiring passages, tunnels and spectacular halls. We then visit Lipica, one of the oldest stud farms in the world with a tradition dating back to 1580 and home to the famous Lippizanner horses.
DAY 5 Today we journey along the sunny Riviera from Opatija and the southern part of the Istrian peninsula to Pula. Pula is dotted with Roman ruins, the most impressive of which is the spectacular Roman amphitheatre. This magnificent structure was initially built during the reign of Emperor Augustus (31BC-14AD). It retains its elliptical shape and, at 130m x 100m, it is one of the six largest Roman amphitheatres in the world and the only one to have four side towers and all three levels preserved. Whilst here a visit to the Verudela peninsula is a must.
DAY 6 Today will be at leisure again, providing us with the opportunity to take a stroll along Opatija’s famous 12km coastal promenade, where we will pass many of its shingle beaches, all lined with impressive villas and pretty gardens.
DAY 7 Our final excursion is a visit to the picturesque towns of Rabac & Labin. By the middle of the 19th century, Rabac was a small fishing village with hardly ten houses. Due to the beautiful bay and splendid surroundings, it became and still remains a popular destination. The medieval town of Labin is situated on the hill above Rabac. The town has an interesting history, having been the largest coal-mining centre in Croatia. One of the first anti-fascist rebellions occurred here in 1921, after which the town established its own Republic.
DAY 8 Sadly it is time to depart this beautiful region as we board our coach for the transfer to the airport and our return flight back to the UK.
