Additional Information

The Ironbridge is having plenty of TLC in 2018. It’s been wrapped up and our friends at English Heritage are getting down to some Conservation in Action. The bridge remains accessible and your group can walk across it into the charming town of Ironbridge. There’s free coach parking on the south side of the bridge and interpretation shedding light on the important work being carried out. You can also visit the free exhibition that shows how the Bridge was built in the original tollhouse, right next door.

English Heritage have also opened a high-level walkway adjacent to the Bridge so visitors can see the restoration work in progress and there are a team of volunteers on-hand to talk about the work.

Shropshire sits comfortably on the English Welsh border. On this holiday we visit Shropshire’s top attraction, the Ironbridge Gorge, known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Many visitors are attracted to the superb Victorian themed museums, however the Gorge is a splendid attraction in its own right. In the medieval town of Shrewsbury you can marvel at the black and white buildings. Then there’s Ludlow, it’s not just beautiful it’s delicious!

Outward journey via Warwick, which lies upon the River Avon and has lovely medieval streets with unique shops and restaurants.

Visit Shrewsbury. The town centre here is packed with timber-framed black & white buildings, steep narrow streets and alleyways.

Visit Ironbridge Gorge. In 1709, Abraham Darby discovered how to use Coke in iron-smelting making iron much cheaper and heralding the Industrial Revolution. The iron bridge itself was built across the River Severn, 70 years later by Darby’s grandson. The open air Blists Hill Museum, on the site of the former coal mine, re-creates life in the gorge in the 19th century.

Free time in Ludlow, described by John Betjeman as “the loveliest town in England” and by Country Life as “the most vibrant small town in the Country”. With over 500 listed buildings, mainly Georgian or half-timbered, Ludlow is a feast for the eyes. Afterwards to Much Wenlock, a town in miniature, filled with black-and-white houses, friendly traditional pubs, a good range of individual shops, and one of the most impressive sets of monastic ruins you’ll ever see. In the care of English Heritage, Wenlock Priory’s serene and majestic remains are an unmissable, unforgettable sight.

Return journey via Bourton on the Water.
