Durham is home to the most beautiful Romanesque cathedral in England, positioned next to Durham Castle, forming an impressive panorama. Enjoy exploring this compact city, The Beamish Open Air Museum and amazing Ushaw.

Day 1

Travel to Durham stopping Newark for lunch to be purchased.

Day 2

Today we visit the hidden gem that is Ushaw. Tucked away in beautiful open countryside near Durham City are Ushaw’s Historic House, Chapels & Gardens, each corner is waiting to wow, a place where wonder, curiosity and amazement collide. Stop the world for a while and be surprised.

Day 3

Free day in Durham, visit Durham Cathedral, one of the most iconic landmarks in England. The Cathedral is known for its stunning Romanesque architecture, including its famous rose window. Take a wander around Prince Bishops Place home to eclectic mix of popular high streets stores, independent shops and eateries. Opportunity to try some Durham ‘stottie cake’, a type of flat bread that is round with a dimpled surface. Visit Durham Castle, which gradually turned into a lavish palace, and is now part of University College (extra cost, tours must be booked).

Day 4

After breakfast we visit Beamish, the Living Museum of the North. This famous open-air museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. We experience town life as it would have been in the 1940s during World War II, visit a 1940’s farm, pop into the Colliery and Pit Village in the early 1900s and take unlimited free rides on the Beamish tram. There are plenty of places to purchase refreshments.

Day 5

Return to home area via Stamford, where numerous period dramas have been filmed, for lunch to be purchased.
