A lovely review we received from our tour call backs. This particular holiday was the Mystery Tour that went away last Friday to... Eastbourne!
'It was lovely, was going to ring to say how lovely the hotel was (The Oban Hotel), it has had a lot of money ploughed into it and is very, very nice. The manager and the staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for us. The manager was there at every meal time in case anyone had any reason to complain. The food was very good and the dining room was so lovely and clean, it was perfect. Our room was very nice too. Steve the driver was so helpful and very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for him. This was our 1st Mystery Tour and we will definitely be doing another one. Thought it was excellent value for money' - Mr Parsall

A NEW SHOW we have available...
THE GO-BETWEEN at the Apollo Theatre, London
Musical theatre icon Michael Crawford stars in a gripping stage adaption of L.P Hartley's novel THE GO-BETWEEN. Some memories burn brighter than others. A now elderly Leo Colston (Crawford) finds himself thinking back to one long, hot summer. The year 1900 and schoolboy Leo is spending his summer vacation with wealthy classmate Marcus Maudsley and his family. Captivated by his surroundings, the guileless Leo soon finds himself playing go-between to tenant-farmer Ted and the stunning an affluent Marian who are locked in a forbidden love affair. As he becomes increasingly enmeshed in the manipulation and lies of the adults around him, young Leo is not yet fully aware of what he is risking. Adapted by Richard Taylor and David Wood, THE GO-BETWEEN has been hailed a modern musical triumph thanks to its sophisticated score and it's richly layered with subtle storytelling. Profoundly moving and unflinchingly honest, it masterfully presents all the anguish of lost love and lost innocence in what is sure to be one of the most passionate and affecting productions you will see thsi year. Time allowed before the performance for a meal to be obtained.
Please be aware that the majority of our theatre trips starring celebrities are in the evening, when they are schelduled to perform.

A lovely review a customer sent us recently who travelled with a group, on one of our many popular Mystery Tours...
'First thanks for organising the above and despite the weather it was a very successful event enjoyed by all.
Margaret and I have poor memories but I’m sure you said if anybody wanted to submit a brief ‘write-up’ it would be welcomed- so here goes!
Soon after leaving our last pick-up point, Ann had compiled a 50p a go ‘destination sweepstake’. A considerable number opted for destinations in a northerly direction and it wasn’t until the coach headed towards the Queen Elizabeth Bridge they realised they had lost their 50p stake.
After a spell on the motorways and a number of jokes, our coach driver (Roy) opted to journey south using the more scenic A roads. Just before our first ‘comfort stop’ the eventual destination was revealed and two of the passengers who were within 20miles of the mystery destination (Weymouth) shared the ‘kitty’ 50/50.
We were soon back on the coach and continued in a southerly direction for a lunch stop at Burley and then onwards to our mystery destination (Weymouth). The coach drew up outside the scaffolding clad Crown Hotel, resulting in a few ‘raised eyebrows’. However hotel management assured us our rooms were unaffected by the refurbishment, which apart for the need to avoid some local ‘wet-paint’ - thankfully the promise was accurate. The hotel was well located and comfortable with happy attentive staff and sufficient sized home cooked breakfasts and evening meals. The hotel had also set aside a lounge exclusively for our party’s evening entertainment and our coach driver (Roy) organised a Quiz with a Difference comprising of pictures of past sporting celebrities followed by a variety of questions.
On Saturday we had a free morning in a wet and very windy Weymouth. Due to the decidedly inclement weather, most opted for a short stroll and a much longer mid-morning coffee and nibbles break, with most migrating back to the hotel’s U3A exclusive lounge, which was occupied by a Charity’s fund raising event. Most put their hands in their pockets buying raffle and tombola tickets along with bargain buys from the various stalls, the morning highlight was the drawing of the raffle by the ‘Benfleet Born Lady Mayor’ – what a small world we live in!
On Saturday early afternoon we picked up our guide and headed by coach to an extremely (65mph) windy and now wet Lulworth Cove and Jurassic Rock. Due to the extreme weather only the brave followed our determined guide to an area most felt beyond their comfort zone and opted for the safety and warmth of the souvenir shop.
After leaving this ‘area of natural beauty’(to some but possibly not all) Roy took us for an all inclusive cream tea at The Grand Hotel, Swanage. The two scones, cream and jam were superb but did tend to reduce the evening meal appetite. After this well earned interlude it was back on the coach to the hotel for another round of eating and a further similar quiz, organised by Roy, with this evening brain teasers being to identify old TV shows followed by 40 (difficult to most) questions - entertainment related.
Sunday was an early breakfast followed by an ‘amount of sleep debriefing’ from those whose rooms were opposite the local noisy night club or were located under a floor with squeaky floorboards and occupied by nocturnal residents! Fortunately the weather had improved beyond belief as we departed and by the time we reached our return place of interest stop (Winchester) the sun shone throughout the 2 hours we were there. Winchester was well worth a visit, with a cathedral, a busy street market and a pretty river walk which skirts round the back of the city.
After our Winchester stop it was back on the coach for our return journey which was only interrupted by a comfort stop arriving back home at approximately 4pm, enabling us to catch our Sunday evening TV and radio entertainment. One interesting fact came to light on the return journey (but not sure where), one of the members enlightened us that he spent much of his childhood staying in a small cottage on an enormous country estate which has the longest brick built periphery wall in Europe – and I guess not a lot of people knew that!
Last but not least a well deserved thank you to Jenny Curtis for organising this very enjoyable event and to Roy our coach drive for the variety of entertainment he provided which helped to make this a memorable holiday.'

NEW Dates confirmed for the popular Highgrove Gardens
Now available to book online and save!
Highgrove is the private home of TRH the Prince of Wales & the Duchess of Cornwall. Since 1980 when the Prince of Wales first arrived at Highgrove, His Royal Highness has devoted much energy to transforming the gardens around the house. What was once a somewhat bleak landscape is now one of the most creatively inspired gardens of today. We visit Tetbury for free time and lunch to be obtained before our afternoon visit to Highgrove.
Among the memories of "how it was then" we recall the start of the package holiday, the "bargain break"
bedrooms which did not have beverage trays and televisions. We also recall the way our coaches were taken on board cross-channel ferries, lifted on by crane - a very worrying experience and a far cry from the present day drive on drive off ferries and cross-channel trains on and under the channel. Kirbys were among a very few coaches to travel abroad in those days.
Our experienced and knowledgeable drivers are courteous and helpful...
We offer a selection of coach holidays which include some of the favourite places we have visited during 62 years as well as some 'new' destinations and we look forward to the pleasure of your company. Whichever coach holiday you choose, you can be sure of our usual care for your comfort and enjoyment, our careful selection of hotels and carefree travel on our luxury coaches.

Eddie Kirby founder of Kirbys Coaches passed away
Eddie moved to Rayleigh in 1934 with his parents and sister
Eddie went on to work with his Father in London at
Eddie was a pioneer of coach travel from the UK to most
In 1972 he imported the innovative Kässbohrer Setra coach, the first to be imported to England from Germany. Ten years later he purchased the second Setra into England. This launched the marque in the UK and laid the foundations for the resurgence of the Mercedes Benz coach brand. Kirbys Coaches entire fleet of 10 coaches are now Setras.
New models of coaches have to undergo very strict safety tests including the heart-stopping “tilt test” which entails tilting coaches to 35 degrees. If they tilt rather than topple they are safe to travel on our roads. Both of the pioneering Setra coaches imported by Eddie were tilt tested whilst the Kirby family watched on with baited breath.
Eddie was one of just two British coach drivers to have been recognised by the IRU (International Road Transport Union) in 1984 for 30 years of safe and courteous driving. He was also awarded a coveted gold lapel badge for having completed 2,000,000km at the wheel of Setra coaches. He was appreciated by local town dignitaries across Europe for bringing English people to holiday in their town often with a small ceremony and a memorative keepsake, in particular Boppard and Bernkastel in Germany and Altmünster in Austria where Eddie forged close friendships.
Eddie was still very much involved in the business he started. Now his two sons and their families are involved. His eldest son Simon operates Kirbys Coaches and his younger son Matthew operates his own coach business, Setras of course, working in collaboration. They are very much family concerns with wives and other family members working alongside office staff and P.S.V. drivers.
There are, of course, very many amusing anecdotes to be told from the travels over the years –too many to relate here, but one story I will tell about the times long ago when chamber pots were provided under the hotel beds (before en suite bedrooms) and one of our passengers went to all the bedrooms and tipped sherbet into the potties, unbeknown to the occupants of the bedrooms.
Eddie was an active member of the Rotary Club supporting its charitable activities over many years. He was a Patron of the Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Haltern Twinning Association.
A great many people will have fond memories of Eddie. He was a pleasure to work with, to travel with and to be with. As they say:- “He was such a nice man – a kind and gentle man.”
Bob a dear friend to Kirbys
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the loss of our friend and driver, (Kirbys official Guitarist and Entertainer), Bob Frost.
Having been diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) Bob was on leave from driving and receiving treatment. On Sunday 22nd February Bob collapsed having suffered a severe stroke and after a brave fight Bob passed away on his 71st birthday, Saturday 14th March.
Bob will be greatly missed by all at Kirbys and leaves behind his loving wife Wendy, daughters Jane, Lynette and Kiri and son Peter and grandchildren.
Among his many interests and talents Bob loved taking you, his fans and friends, away on holiday (he often said after a holiday “I think all went well but the people were so lovely”), he loved to entertain you with his guitar and music from the Shadows, West End musicals and Duane Eddy. Bob took immense pride in his coach always ensuring that it was “on the top line” before going away on a holiday. Bob had such a broad range of interests that he was able to keep his passengers entertained and informed, sometimes in quite intricate technical detail, about bridges and tunnels and all manner of things and all with his gentle good humour. Bob has been a friend of the Kirby family since he operated his own coach business in the 1960’s, sharing with Eddie Kirby an admiration of the AEC / Plaxton built coaches which they both operated.
Away from Kirbys Bob had a passion for trains and railways having worked as an engine driver on the London Underground and owning several narrow gauge engines (one of which he built himself) that he would take to shows. He also had a film recording and reproduction business and two grandsons living locally who often required his engineering skills to repair robots, trucks, bicycles and all manner of other toys.
Bob Frost – a true gentleman.
